Peter & John

Hello and welcome back! Last week Jane told us about when the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost. The disciples and people who had been following Jesus were changed from a very scared, nervous bunch, to a group of men and women who did amazing things for God! Today we’re going to hear about Peter and John and what happened to them one pretty ordinary day when they were on their way to the temple to worship God…

What surprising thing happened for the man begging outside the temple? How long had he had this problem? How did Peter and John help him? Whose power was it that made him better?

This video shows what happened afterwards, when some people got upset with what had happened!

Why were some people unhappy with what had happened? When they tried to make Peter and John promise not to talk about what happened, how did they reply?

There are three really important things in this story:

  1. Even though this is a story from a very long time ago, God has exactly the same power today! He can still heal people and make them better from all sorts of things.
  2. When Peter was talking to the crowd afterwards he said, “Jesus is the only One who can save people. No one else in the world is able to save us.” (Acts 4:12) He knew that sin which separates us from God is a lot worse than not being able to walk. But Jesus is able to save us!
  3. Unfortunately, some people today won’t be happy when they see amazing things that God does or when they hear us talk about Jesus. They will try to make us stop talking about him. Let’s be like Peter and John and keep telling people anyway!

Remember it, pray it

This is what Peter and John said when they were told to never speak about Jesus again:

“Should we obey you or God? We cannot keep quiet. We must speak about what we have seen and heard.” Acts 4: 19 & 20

Try to remember those words and ask God to help you when people try to stop you talking about Jesus.

Dear God, thank you for the amazing power you have to heal people, not just from illnesses but from sin too. Please help us to tell people about you even if we’re told not to. Amen

Things to do

Make a man with wobbly legs to remind you of the story! Draw a person but don’t include legs. Cut out the body you’ve drawn and two strips of paper to Fold the strips of paper in a concertina then stick in place of the legs.

Do some decoding. You can either print this page or just open it and use a separate piece of paper to work out the answers.

Enjoy a spot the difference, a word search or a crossword.

Sing along to this great song which tells the whole story!
