Abraham and Isaac

Pebbles, Rocks and Topz started off with some worship together. They sang a couple of their favourite songs, and the little ones enjoyed playing instruments.
They played ‘Simon Says’ as a clue to the story – God telling Abraham to sacrifice his son, Isaac. In the game, it didn’t matter if the children didn’t follow the instructions or got things wrong as it was only for fun. But God needed to know that Abraham would trust him to do whatever he said. It seemed like a confusing instruction, but Abraham was willing to obey what God told him. It was a relief that Abraham was stopped at the last minute and that there was a ram to take Isaac’s place as the sacrifice.
This story is a picture of what Jesus would do, except that he knew what he was facing and went voluntarily. God didn’t stop Jesus being killed, but instead brought him back to life!
Our stories over the last couple of weeks have been focused on one family, and have reminded us that Jesus died so that we could be part of God’s family too. So for our craft this week, the children made origami houses and filled them with family. Some children drew their own family members, but Forefront church family was included too!
Think about: This week, the children were set a challenge for the children – each of them was given a bag of sweets to give away to someone, preferably not someone in their own family or a close friend. Next week they’ll spend some time talking about what happened, and we might share some of their stories with the rest of church too!
