In John 8:36, Jesus did not say ‘if the Son sets you free you will be free indeed’. But He said, ‘If the Son makes you free you will be free indeed.’ The making free is His ransom laid down in his life-blood.
This is the context for Mark 9:14 – 32 – the story of a boy set free from an impure spirit and Jesus’ teaching about his death and resurrection. In the song, we celebrate this:
You defeated hell and grave
For this ransomed soul to say
‘Thank You Lord, I am free indeed.’
